U

UCR (Under Colour Removal)
The removal of cyan, magenta and yellow from neutral colour areas (primarily shadow tones) and their replacement with black.
UGR
Under colour Grey Removal.
Ultra-Violet
That part of the electromagnetic spectrum lying beyond the blue end of the visible spectrum; it is the primary cause of pigment failing. Ultra-violet curing: polymerisation effected by the presence of ultra-violet. The drying mechanism of inks designed to cure by ultra-violet irradiation.
Underwriter's Laboratories (U.L.)
A non-profit corporation operating in the public interest, endeavouring to maintain safety standards in electrical equipment and appliances. Licensed use of its label requires close adherence to their specifications.
Uniform Chromaticity Scale Diagram
Any one of a variety of transformations of the CIE chromaticity diagram on which all pairs of just noticeably different colours of equal luminance are represented by pairs of points separated by nearly equal distances.
Uniform Colour Scale
A scale wherein the units of colour difference that are judged to be equally different, are separated by nearly equal distances.
Uniform Colour Space
Three-dimensional space wherein all pairs of colours judged to be equally different, are separated by nearly equal distances.
UV Resistant
Combats degradation by ultra violet; i.e. maintains original characteristics longer than non-U.V. resistant materials.
V

Vacuum Forming
A process whereby a print on a plastic sheet is heated and distorted over a mould by air pressure. Used for embossed or relief prints, and producing 3D items such as blister packs, cycle helmets.
Value
Indicates the degree of lightness or darkness of a colour in relation to a neutral grey scale. The scale of value ranges from 0 for pure black to 10 for pure white.
Varnish
(See "Extender") 1) Transparent material that is printed or coated over a print. 2) A medium in which pigment may be ground to make an ink. 3) A material that may be added to an ink to increase its transparency.
Vehicle
The liquid portion of a pigmented coating or ink including the binders or adhesives and modifiers.
Vignette
A transition from one colour or intensity to another.
Vinyl
A versatile thermoplastic available in rigid as well as limp form.
Virtual Reality
Interactive 3D graphics. Simulates realism to users in application areas ranging from scientific visualisation and visual simulation to high-definition design and digital film production.
Virus
An malicious implant put into software that can cause failures of systems such as data or memory loss.
Viscometer
An instrument to measure the viscosity (resistance to flow) of a liquid.
Viscosity
The internal resistance to flow possessed by a liquid. It is determined by measuring the force required to shear the liquid, i.e. to move one layer over another in orderly flow without turbulence at a defined rate.
VOC's
Volatile Organic Compounds. Derivatives of oil which evaporate into the atmosphere.
Volatile
Subject to evaporation at a relatively low temperature.
